That the encyclopedia became obsolete with the advent of internet and its search engines like google search or yahoo search is an old story. Fifteen years ago when my daughters were still in their elementary school, we invested a fortune to buy a complete set of encyclopedia for their use to do research work on certain school assignments. But now, with google search, a student would just visit an internet café, open the computer, click the mozilla firefox and he would be directed to the google search. Then he would type the topic that he wanted to get information, and click search, in a few seconds, he will have the information he needs on screen.

It has been several years since we lost brod Victor “Saxo” C. Navasero, Jr. ‘55. Brod Saxo was the acknowledged Upsilon Sigma Phi’s stag singer. During the years that I was a resident fellow, the frat stag party was Saxo. Saxo was a livewire, the center of attraction, the stand-up comedy artist and stag sing along master rolled into one. I must confess that one of the reasons why I always made it a point to attend the frat’s stag parties aside from the overflowing ice cold beer was brod Saxo. He was Mr. Entertainment. Raw attraction. The epitome of a hang loose Upsilonian. He was vulgar, but we loved him for being such!

Last Sunday afternoon, I decided to invite my wife to the movies. Earlier that day, I read a good review written by columnist Rina Jimenez-David in her “At Large” column in the Philippine Daily Inquirer about the movie “Mama Mia”. Reading her review, I thought “Mama Mia- the Movie” would be comparable to “Xanadu” – the musical which topbilled Olivia Newton-John Travolta. Xanadu is a memorable movie for me and my wife. It was such a big hit when it was shown in1981. In fact, I got the name of my eldest daughter from the character played by Olivia-Newton John in that movie – KIRA.

Since we started firing from one Stage to another at 10:00 a.m., all of us followed strictly all the safety rules in handling our guns. Nobody was disqualified by the Range Officers. It was then that I realized the importance that a gun owner must belong to a Philippine National Police-accredited gun club. I guess that the value of cultivating the individual discipline being inculcated in us owners of gun during the entire process from attending seminars on gun safety, to applying the knowledge that we learned in actual shooting tournament is priceless that all gun owners must have to experience. Moreover, this experience I am sure would soon become part of our consciousness which would then become part of our lifestyle.

While waiting for my turn to be on the firing line at Stage 1, I saw that there were few shooters waiting for their turn at the firing line of Stage 4. So, I pulled out my card from Stage 1 and submitted it to the Range Officer of Stage 4. I first made a thorough study of all the targets in Stage 4. It looked like a movie set. Temporary structures made with ordinary lumber were nailed together to form like a series of rooms with blue plastic sacks stapled on the lumber as walls. There were series of small windows and as the shooter will move from one small window to the next, the shooter will see several targets which must be fired at. At the end, the shooter must fire at a target which will trigger the swinging of another target that must be fired at. If I remembered it right, Stage 4 required a total of 32 rounds that must be fired at.
